How to make multiple TikTok videos private

Going private is the underrated move. It buys you almost everything deleting buys you and it costs nothing you cannot take back.

TikTok calls the setting Only you. According to TikTok’s post visibility documentation, every post carries its own audience: everyone, friends, or only you. Flip a post to Only you and it leaves your public grid while staying exactly where it was for you. Nothing counts down, nothing expires.

Compare that to deleting, which starts a 30-day clock in Recently Deleted and then ends.

Private post is not the same as private account

These two get mixed up constantly and they solve different problems.

A private account, documented here in Portuguese, puts the whole profile behind follower approval. Everything you ever posted becomes visible to approved followers and nobody else. One switch, very blunt.

Per-post visibility is surgical. Your profile stays open, the videos you are proud of stay up, and the 2021 material you would rather not explain goes quiet. That is usually what people actually mean when they say they want to hide their old TikToks.

The part that eats your evening

Changing one post is quick. Changing two hundred is the same four gestures two hundred times, and TikTok gives you no way to select a batch.

Worth deciding before you start: what exactly are you hiding? “Everything before 2023” is a rule you can execute and verify. “The cringe ones” is not, because you will stop and re-watch every single video and it will be midnight.

Old content aging badly is a completely normal reason to clean up, by the way. The USENIX Security work on deletion privacy documents that people remove old social posts for ordinary reasons, and content simply stopping being relevant is one of them. You are not being paranoid.

Hide, do not delete. You can put it all back in six months when the contract is signed, and you will want to, because some of those videos are good. More in clean up your TikTok before a job search.
