Delete your posts, deactivate, or delete the account?

People arrive at this question already frustrated, and then pick the biggest hammer available. Usually that is the wrong one.

Three options, and they are not degrees of the same thing.

Clear the posts, keep the account

Your profile stays, your username stays, your followers stay, and the content goes. This is what most people actually want when they say they are done with TikTok, because the thing they want to escape is the archive, not the account.

You do it post by post using the delete flow, or you hide them with Only you and keep the option of bringing them back.

The username argument matters more than it sounds. It is the one thing you cannot get back once it is released, and someone will take it.

Deactivate

TikTok documents account deactivation here. It is the pause button: the profile goes dark and you can come back.

Deactivating is good for “I need to not be on this app for two months”. It is not a cleanup. When you return, every post you were worried about returns with you, in exactly the state you left it. If your problem is a specific video from 2021, deactivation does not touch that problem, it postpones it.

Delete the account

The nuclear option, and the only one that gets rid of the account itself. Read TikTok’s own page carefully before starting, because there is a waiting period, and the username goes back into circulation afterwards.

I would only do this if I genuinely never intend to be on TikTok again. If there is any chance you post from this account in two years, clean it instead. A quiet profile with an empty grid costs you nothing to keep.

What I would actually do

Back up first, always: request your data and wait for the export, as covered in back up your TikTok before you delete anything.

Then clear the reposts, because it is fast and completely reversible. Then set a date cutoff and hide everything before it, per delete old TikToks from a specific year. Then look at what is left and decide, individually, whether anything needs to be actually deleted.

Nine times out of ten you finish that and the urge to delete the whole account is gone, because the account was never the problem. The 2021 videos were.
