How to make multiple TikTok videos Friends only

Published: · Last revised:

Most cleanup advice gives you two buttons: leave it up, or nuke it. TikTok actually gives you three, and nobody talks about the middle one.

Every post carries its own audience setting, and TikTok documents three: Everyone, Friends, Only you. Friends is not a list you curate. On TikTok a friend is someone you follow who follows you back, so the follow has to go both ways. Flip a post to Friends and it leaves the public grid while the people who were actually there can still watch it. That matters. Going private removes the video from everyone, including the twelve people it was really for. Friends only keeps them in.

When Friends beats Only you

I reach for Friends when the video is fine and the audience is the problem. The 2019 gym videos. The inside jokes that need context. Anything that was written for twelve people and is now sitting in front of twelve thousand. A recruiter who is not a mutual follow will not see it, and your actual friends notice no change at all. Only you is for when you want the post gone from everybody’s view and you are keeping it for yourself. Friends is for when there is still an audience you want, and it is small.

Check one thing before you commit: your friends list is whoever follows you back right now. It is not frozen when you change the setting. If someone unfollows you later, they lose access. If a stranger follows you and you follow back, they gain it. The audience moves.

The part that takes an evening

Changing one post to Friends takes several steps. TikTok’s help describes changing a post’s audience, but it does not document a batch option. If you change many posts by hand, keep a written count and review each one as you go.

That is why a date rule beats a feeling. “Everything before 2022 goes to Friends” can be executed and checked. “The cringe ones” means re-watching your own videos for three hours, and you will not finish.

In FixMyTok you filter the library down to what you mean, whether that is a year, a range or a visibility state, select the lot, pick Make Friends-Only and confirm once. The app shows how many of the selection will change and how many already have that setting, because posts already set to Friends are skipped instead of counted twice. It works in both directions, so a post you set to Friends can go back to Everyone in bulk, the same way it got there. That is the whole argument for it over deleting: you keep the option.

For the stricter version, where nobody but you can see the post, make them private. If you are still choosing between all three, Everyone vs Friends vs Only you vs delete lays out what each one costs.
