How to archive TikTok videos without deleting them

Published: · Last revised:

Instagram gave everyone the word. You archive a post, it leaves your grid, you keep it, and one tap brings it back. People go looking for the same button on TikTok and it is not there.

What TikTok has instead is per-post visibility. Set a post to Only you and you get what you wanted from archiving: it is off your public profile, it is still in your account, and you can undo it whenever. TikTok documents the three settings, Everyone, Friends and Only you, and Only you is the one that does the archive’s job.

I am precise about this because the difference bites people. There is no separate archive shelf that protects posts from account changes. The video is still a normal post with a normal privacy setting. If you delete it, it is deleted. Hiding is not a backup.

Two things people mean by archive

The first is “get it off my profile but do not destroy it”. That is Only you. It takes effect immediately, it is free and you can reverse it.

The second is “keep a copy I own”, and the privacy setting does nothing for it. If you want the files, because you are changing platforms or because you do not trust any account to last, you want your TikTok data export, which TikTok prepares and hands you as a download. Request it first, because it takes time to generate, and do it before any cleanup. Most people asking about archiving want the first thing. The ones about to delete an account want both, in that order, and the export is the part they regret skipping. More on getting a copy out first.

Doing it for every post

Changing a post to Only you takes several steps. TikTok’s help describes the audience change for one post and does not document a batch option. If you do this by hand, use a clear date cutoff and check each post as you go.

In FixMyTok you filter to a year or a date range, select the lot, Make Private and confirm once. That is the archive, applied in bulk, from your phone. The trip back is the same selection the other way: filter by private, Make Public, done. That is the real argument for using Only you as your archive instead of deleting: you can bring it all back, and after a delete you cannot.

If you would rather the posts stay visible to the people who were there, Friends only is the softer setting. The whole privacy picture covers moving between all of them.
